History

In 1887 the Chicago, Burlington, and Quincy Railroad built a line from Holdrege to Cheyenne through this area. Platted in 1889 with streets named for rocks: Granite, Marble, Flint, Agate, Boulder, and Slate. The 1890s drought caused severe decline and the post office closed from 1892 to 1907. Burlington Northern abandoned and removed tracks in 1983, severing the town's last rail access. The land was originally Cheyenne, Arapaho, and Lakota Sioux territory where bison grazed on buffalo grass.
