History
Gold lode discovered July 4, 1879 -- hence the name. Over $190,000 in gold produced in 1881-82 alone. By 1882, 1,500 people lived here with 40+ businesses. But veins exhausted quickly and by 1888 the population had dwindled. In the winter of 1899, stranded residents disassembled buildings to make skis and skied 40 miles to Aspen.
