History
A U.S. Army post established in 1867 to protect travelers on the Bozeman Trail. Served as a major staging point for campaigns against the Lakota and Cheyenne, including the 1876 campaign. After military closure in 1882, a rough civilian town briefly occupied the site before it too was abandoned.
