History

One of Wyoming's first coal mining towns, established when the Union Pacific Railroad needed fuel. Named for its carbon deposits, the town also gave Carbon County its name. At peak, 3,000 people worked the mines. A violent 1886 explosion killed multiple miners. The UP shifted operations to Hanna in 1902 and Carbon was abandoned.
