History

Founded during the 1867 Sweetwater Gold Rush, South Pass City boomed to 4,000 residents with hotels, stores, saloons, and a newspaper. It was here that Esther Hobart Morris became the first female justice of the peace in the US (1870), and Wyoming women were first in the nation to gain voting rights. Gold played out by 1872. Now a beautifully restored Wyoming State Historic Site.
